Plasma (EDTA)bllod is needed.

Avoid excess presure on the arm.

Place the sample on ice and perform the estimation immediatly because concentration increases on standing.

Don’t use hemolysed sample.

Important facts

Ammonia is produced in the liver, intestine, and kidneys as the end product of the protein metabolism.Liver converts ammonia into urea.which is then excreted by the kidneys.

Increased in

  1. Its raised level indicates liver diseases like ,Fulminant hepatitic failure and cirrhosis.
  2. Gastrointestinal bleeding.
  3. Renal diseases.
  4. Reye“s syndrome.
