Alkaline phosphatase level (ALP )
Rate: Rs. 200
Sample
This test is done on the Serum of the patient.
Important Facts
- This is an enzyme present in the blood and its subtypes are present in the liver, intestine bones and placenta.
- The conditions which will stimulate bone cells leads to increase level of ALP.
- The liver ALP is increased in biliary obstruction.
- AP is involved in bone calcification.
- The stimulus which increases bone activity cause increase in the AP level. So elevated level indicate liver or bone diseases.
- AP level rises during active bone formation in growth in infants, childrens and adolescents. So they have raised level up to 3 times of the normal than the adults.
- Pregnancy can also leads to raised leve.
Significance
- In the absence of bone disease or pregnancy, markedly raised level of Alkaline phosphatase ( around 10 times ) is best marker of liver obstructive pathology.
- It is 1 to 2 times raised level may be seen in various liver parenchymal diseases like hepatitis and Cirrhosis.
- Its level may be mildly raised in metastatic diseases of liver.
- Also increased in bone disease like Pagets disease, healing fractures, Rickets, pregnancy and childhood.
- There are higher level in child, infant and is 3 times the adult level.
- It is also raised in oldage and pregnancy.
Normal value varies according to the kit and methodology used.
