Sample

This test is done on the Serum of patient.

Patients should fast for 8 hours before giving the sample.

Avoid hemolysis and separate serum immediatly.

It is stable for 8 hours at room temp.and at 4C for 5 days.

3.1—7.5 units /L

• Aldolase is present in all tissue like heart, brain, kidneys, and prominent in skeletal muscles.It converts sugar to enenrgy.

CAUSES
The Aldolase level is increased in:

1. Cell destruction like Acute mycardial infartion.
2. Burns.
3. Acute hepatits(Viral or toxic).
4. Inflammatory diseases of muscles(Myopathy).
5. Muscular dystrophy.
6. Carcinoma of prostate.
7. Myelocytic leukaemia.
8. Megaloblastic Anaemia and hemolytic anaemia.
9. In neoplasia like ,carcinoma metastatic to liver, lung,breast,genitourinary system,melanoma and CNS tumors.

It is Normal in:

1. Neurogenic muscle atrpphy.
2. Cirrhosis ( or may be slightly increased).
3. obstructive jaundice ( or may be slightly increased )

This test is nonspecific so not commonly requested except for follow up of muscle diseases.
Significans
The increase in the level reflects the intensity of the disease and one can serially measure to know the effect of treatment by corticosteroides.
